Malang

2019-10-05 Malang

Malang is a little cooler, quieter and smaller town-ish than Surabaya.

In retrospect it probably would've made more sense to stay an extra day in Surabaya as there is a lot more stuff happening there.

An eating stop (at IBC of course) with some great fish soup. This is probably our fourth fish dish so far today. We don't eat much fish at home so we are making the most of it.

We've finally made it to our base in Malang! Steph's Grandma's (Oma) house. There's a new aviary now that wasn't there last time. There used to be a swing here instead but its been almost ten years since we've been here.

There's also all the bitter nut crackers I'd ever want to eat!

We had Rawon for dinner. The most interesting thing is the deep fried lungs on the top right, called paru paru. Rawon is actually a soup dish, which is not in this photo.

Fruit looking snacks that don't taste anything like fruit! (I believe there is mung bean inside).

Airplanes and crabs because they're somehow thematically linked!

Mysterious fruit (no one knew what it was).

Extreme level of crackers here. Indonesia's cracker game is right at the top.

Oma's koi pond, she has two! They're really neat, but I also hear quite expensive to maintain and buy.

Nasi Bali at this place. Really good! The full pig is on a rotisserie every morning apparently.

This is the nasi bali.

Because of the koi ponds the mosquitoes were out in force every night! The only thing we had to defend ourselves was this taser racquet thing. Which is actually really fun to use but terrifies Steph whenever I zap something.

Finally getting some selfie stick usage.

The Soto place I went to ten years ago. It's still really good!

The result! Tasty Soto. A kind of thin curry ish soup dish.

On the left is ainsle, a dessert that is coconut milk and bread of all things. It was actually better than it sounds! On the right is the standard ginger ball thingy.
