Surabaya 2025

Heyo. Surabaya is the second "chunk" of our trip. The idea was that we've finished our recovery in Bali from the (stupidly long) flight and continue our journey to finally it to Kai's great grandmother's 99th birthday.

So ready to wreck havoc on the plane.

The Hotel!

We made it after a 40 minute drive from the airport to the hotel! The Doubletree by Hilton.

The lobby had amazing art "installations" for Ramadhan.

Man it was fancy! Plus all of Steph's relatives were on the same floor. Kai's grandparents were in the room next to us, and there was a door that opened directly into it so they can save us from the crying toddler. Thanks oma and opa!

Malls

Its hard to explain, but Surabaya is home to "super malls". These malls are roughly a jillion floors, and combine everything you need for a community that never needs to see the sun. Apartments, schools, churches, shopping, work, food.

You never need to leave!

Big children play spaces too.

Hotel Food

Infinite Food

I don't have that many photos, but Steph's relatives were CONSTANTLY delivering food. We couldn't eat it fast enough!

Not to mention I was currently suffering from explosive diarrhoea at the time, I wasn't super keen on eating much.

Kids Area

There were lots of toys on the shelves, but Kai insisted (one at a time, over an hour) that the maids bring each one down and put it in a huge pile. Not sure what he was trying to achieve. Maybe a giant dragon's hoard of soft toys?

The Event

Kai got to meet his cousins. This is Ryu and they got along really well.

They also went swimming together! Note that we had a maid who took care of Kai. It was so helpful.

The boy got to live a pampered life for a very short time. When he needed to be changed he just laid there while TWO (2) maids were undressing him, changing his nappy, redressing him. He didn't even need to activate his muscles to move his limbs, all taken care of, haha!

Kai got to meet his great grandma, who was very fond of him.

In fact, everyone was fond of him. He got a lot more attention than pretty much anyone else, which was sweet. Kai doesn't have many relatives in Perth so its nice to get a glimpse of the "big family" feel.

Airport Hotel (Bali)

Another koi pond in front of the hotel! Kai fed the fish and was having a blast.

I ordered my last chance at Babi Guling before returning to Perth. Sadly this instance it wasn't very good. I should've just gone with the restaurants I know were good rather than those with high ratings.
